According to a study published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. Adding sour cherries to your diet is an effective way to improve intestinal health. As part of the study, researchers examined the effect of tart cherry concentrate on intestinal bacteria using laboratory tests and clinical trials.

the purpose of this research was to note the Prebiotic effects of polyphenols. Composition of polyphenols is very unique in the tart of cherries, chlorogenic acid in particular.
For the Petri dish test, the researchers used Montmorency tart cherry concentrated juices, commercially available concentrates and apricot cultivars. All of which did not contain dietary fiber. Then bacterial fermentation tests were done. To evaluate what are the effects of fruits on the gut microbiota. These samples were extracted and sequenced. The clinical trial, on the other hand, involved nine healthy participants who did not use antibiotics at least 12 weeks before the start of the study. During the trial, participants drank eight ounces of Montmorency Tart cherry juice daily for five days.
Laboratory tests revealed that all pie and sweet cherry products improved intestinal health. Fermentation of sugars and carbohydrates was the main source of energy for good intestinal bacteria. In the meantime, the results of the clinical trial showed that the consumption of acidulous cherry juice improved intestinal health, as evidenced by the increase in the number of good intestinal bacteria.
The researchers concluded that eating or drinking more tart cherries can improve intestinal health because of the fruit’s unique blend of polyphenols. In turn, this could lead to better health.
